1952 Argo, Four Actions Cars Set in Original Box

1952 Argo, Four Actions Cars Set in Original Box

Wonderful tin litho boxed set of Four Action Cars manufactured by Argo Industries Corp., N.Y., New York. Sold individually, or in sets of four and eight, each is a sedan with a manual "action" all its own. This example complete with its original box and insert has never been played with. It's in superb near mint to near mint+ condition.

Available from 1952 to 1955 these toys were typically available in 5¢ and 10¢ cent stores. They were designed to produce a lot of fun for little money. Which in this case was 79¢. This is an earlier set with each auto lithoed a solid color. Later sets included two tone, checkerboard (taxi), and red cross (ambulance).

All four are highlighted with silver details (split front windshield, rear oval window, front grille, headlamps, radiator ornament, door handles and rear ARGO license plate). A roof emblem was also included on the commercial vehicles. All have a chrome plated metal chassis and rubber tires.

  • Police Squad Car with recoiling windshield machine gun and clicking sound
  • Meter Taxi Cab with rotating fare and mileage roof meter and ticking sound
  • Windshield Wiper Sedan with dual sweeping opposite direction wipers and clicking sound
  • Fire Chief Car with clanging bell inside the car (hood ornament bell is faux)

The colorful box shows each auto on a wide (perspective drawn) highway. It was creatively drawn as a panel wide illustration with very little text. One box apron was printed with the vehicle type and its corresponding action. The manufacturer's name and address was printed on another apron. The insert was die cut to keep each auto separated and prevent damage.
